Memories from Arthur Stafford

I thought these old photos of Peabody Buildings, Camberwell might be of some interest. The earth covered air-raid shelters can be seen in the background of the V.E. Day celebrations pic, and in the Coronation pic us kids are all standing on the un-earthed shelters. I believe the photos were taken by a South London Observer photographer. I have another press photo somewhere of a large group of people listening to the band playing in Camberwell Green in June 1942, if you think it’s of any use I shall dig it out for you.

I have only today discovered your Camberwell Borough Council website and thought you might, if you haven’t already seen it, be interested in a documentary film a friend recently sent to me. The film was made in 1963 and titled The Changing Face of Camberwell. My family lived on the Peabody Estate facing the Green from 1937 to 1987, and my mother can be seen in the early part of the film carrying a bucket of hot water – We had no hot water or bathroom in those days so the hot water had to be carried from a small boiler house in the centre of the buildings.

The film can be seen on the BFI website at the following link:

I hope it is of interest

Regards

Arthur Stafford
